PortSide NewYork connects New Yorkers to the potential of their waterfront, with a special focus on reaching the underserved. We work to change NYC policy so that maritime activity of all kinds—commercial, educational, recreational—is more a part of waterfront revitalization plans. We are currently located aboard a historic oil tanker, the MARY A. WHALEN, in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
Our Vision. Your Support.
On January 8th, we presented our business plan to the NYC Economic Development Committee (EDC). The exciting plan details an expansion opportunity into an adjacent warehouse space that would allow PortSide to develop the year-round facility we have long envisioned—a true asset for the Red Hook community and an amenity for both visiting New Yorkers and tourists. But, we really need your support. Learn More
Permission to Come Aboard
The MARY A. WHALEN welcomes members of the community and visitors to the ship whenever staff is aboard. Through a variety of FREE activities, we offer a different waterfront access experience because we are not in a park, so you get to see a dynamic working waterfront with authentic maritime action. Programming For All Ages
We have so much to teach. Our educational programs serve many members of the community, from elementary schools to PhD candidates and low-income New Yorkers to overseas private schools. Our vocational internships provide job and life skill training, while our e-Museum provides 400+ years of coastal history, as well as a guide to today’s Red Hook.
Hurricane Sandy’s Legacy
In 2012, Hurricane Sandy affected so many, but it caused specific damage to Red Hook, Brooklyn. Starting right after the storm, PortSide stepped up to offer recovery and resiliency work for our neighborhood. While we were honored for our recovery involvement by the Obama White House and the NYS Senate, our resiliency work is far from over. Our ship, the MARY A. WHALEN, still needs protection from the next extreme storm, and we need your help raising $26,000 for the FEMA-approved project. Learn More
