Come hear Poets Afloat! Chill on our ship deck in a hammock and listen. Have a beer and hear. Watch waves and birds, hear poems written by poets who were inspired by time on historic ships in NYC during the 3rd year of NYC Poets Afloat. We hosted poet Bonnie Jill Emmanuel, who posted about her time here “writing-reading-dreaming in the captain’s cabin and on deck in the bright sun. It’s so cool.” Emanuel will be reading with others from the 2022 roster including Bill Livingston, Spurgeon Smith, Maya Mahmoud, Kyle Studstill, Matt Turner, and Brad Vogel.
In addition to PortSide’s MARY A.. WHALEN, the host boats included a tugboat, a barge, a square-rigged sailing ship, a lightship, a lighthouse tender, and a sailboat. The other organizations were the Tideland Institute, Lilac Preservation Project, Waterfront Barge Museum, South Street Seaport Museum, and the sailboat Nellie Bly.
“I’m always intrigued and delighted to see how the poets absorb and refract their experiences afloat into something new,” said poet Brad Vogel, founder and coordinator of NYC Poets Afloat, and a poet himself..
