The Amateur Astronomers Association will be bringing telescopes to see the moon and showing the public how to use them and explaining what you see.
PortSide added a nautical element, use of a sextant. A sextant is a device historically used in navigation by determining the angle between the horizon and the celestial body such as the moon. We will bring our own. TJ Galarza who lives in the Gowanus area and is a teen SeaScout from the Sea Dart II will explain what he’s learning about celestial navigation. Capt. Jimmy . Zatwarnicki will also bring a sextant and a star finder. He is capatain of the Sea Dart II and Associate Dean for Faculty and Associate Professor of Nautical Science, Marine Transportation at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (aka Kings Point).
