Opening of Rusty Zimmerman "Free Portrait Project" Red Hook

  • Strong Rope Brewery 185 Van Dyke St - enter via Barnell Street alley NY, 11231 United States (map)

The Red Hook installment of Rusty Zimmerman’s “Free Portrait Project” opens Friday, October 9 from 6:00 to 9:00pm at Strong Rope Brewery with a DJ and food trucks. This is an opportunity for the viewing audience to meet the participants, and for the participants to meet each other. Each portrait will be accompanied by a QR code leading to their oral history excerpt published on SoundCloud.

Strong Rope Brewery will hold all 50 of the portraits and recorded oral history excerpts for the month of October in partnership with Red Hook Open Studios.

After the exhibit, images and audio will then be shared with PortSide’s virtual museum www.redhookwaterstories.org and Story House, and offered to the center for Brooklyn History for consideration into their permanent collection of oral histories of Brooklyn.

PortSide supported this project in several ways (we suggested people for the project, we made our ship available as a painting studio, we allowed Rusty to store painting supplies here so he didn’t have to bike them across Brooklyn for his painting sessions)

Rusty is no longer accepting applications for the Red Hook project. The image is one of his outreach graphics.
