25th anniversary of 9/11: the maritime response & time of quiet reflection

  • Pier 11, Atlantic Basin Clinton Wharf Brooklyn, NY 11231 USA (map)

2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Since our exhibit on the 10th anniversary “The Mariners’ Response to 9/11,” PortSide has been committed to growing awareness of the significant role the maritime community had responding to the attacks including evacuation, supply of ground zero, rubble removal, and a network of emergency ferries for two years.

On Friday night of 9/11/26, from 6-9pm, our ship deck will be open for viewing the Tribute in Light over Ground Zero. You can have quiet private time or talk with our ED Carolina Salguero who reported on 9/11 for eight months from that day for the next eight months. She was the only photojournalist to document the improv flotilla of boats which evacuated some some 750,000 from Manhattan, then spent the first week at Ground Zero, and next reported on repercussions around NYC.

Inside the Mary Whalen, you can see a small exhibit, read related books and oral histories; and in the galley, you can watch the 12 minute video “Boatlift” about the evacuation. #NeverForget
