The historic sloop Clearwater played a big role in the clean-up of the Hudson River and, via PortSide, will be offering programs in Red Hook for the first time in about 20 years! The Clearwater will be tied up next to our ship, the tanker Mary Whalen for a week, arriving on Sunday. Tuesday through Friday mornings, she is taking school students sailing. Public programs are after that. You can go sailing from here or tour the Clearwater at the dock for "deck tours."
The Clearwater is taking a school group sailing in the morning. Sign up for a public sunset sail leaving from the Mary Whalen, 5:30 to 8pm. Sails are pay what you can. 45 passengers max. Reserve at https://bit.ly/clearwaterPSNY or the QR code. Once a sail is booked up, it disappears from their calendar.
From May 27th to June 2nd, the famous sloop Clearwater created by Pete Seeger will be based here, tied up next to our Mary A. Whalen. While they are here, the Clearwater will offer some free public sails, some programs while tied up here, and their ship would be visible from ours during TankerTime (when they are not out sailing).
More about the Clearwater from their website “In 1966, folk music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger, in despair over the pollution of his beloved Hudson River, announced plans to “build a boat to save the river.” Seeger, along with many other concerned individuals, believed that a majestic replica of the sloops that sailed the Hudson in the 18th and 19th centuries would bring people to the river where they could experience its beauty and be moved to preserve it.”
